The so called Sunrise Period, which anticipates the total liberalization of second level spanish domains, was started by NIC ES last June.

The first phase of the Sunrise Period, dedicated to Public Corporations, ended on the seventh of July, whereas the second phase of the Sunrise Period will start tomorrow (6 September) and will terminate on 21 October.

In this phase, requesting .eu domains will be possible for the following categories:

1) Foundations, associations or societies registered in Spain. These categories will be able to register domain names corresponding to the complete name of their society. Names corresponding to abbreviations of the entire society name are also allowed, as long as they clearly identify that society name only.

2) Owners or licensees of registered commercial names and registered trademarks, either Spanish or foreigners, owners of denominations of origin or other rights of industrial property protected in Spain. These categories will be able to register domain names corresponding to their commercial name, trademark or denomination of origin. In case of text trademark, the domain name will have to be corresponding to the trademark. In case of figurative trademark, the domain name will have to be corresponding to the distinctive part of the trademark.

Requests will be processed according to the "first come, first served " principle: in case of several applicants having the same right to a domain name, that domain name will be assigned to the applicant who first requested that name.
